Recently I noticed an important change I've seen in my attitude. It's something I hadn't really thought about until reminded of it's importance by the wonderful Imogen Parry at her Creative Mornings talk in Auckland. I've always had very high expectations of myself, and though my studies on creativity and motivation have helped me become less stressed and be more comfortable with the idea of making mistakes - I still manage to have these high expectations. The key difference here is that I no longer worry about failing to meet these expectations, but rather use them as fuel to excite myself about meeting them. It's become a positive motivator rather than feeling like an anchor weighing me down, making it that much harder and feeling that much more pressure to meet them. If you already have high expectations for yourself make sure you are utilising them in this positive way rather than feeling the anchor. If you don't expect much of yourself, it's time to start. Remember that your attitude affects your expectations, which affects your behaviour and in turn affects results. |
