Rules are what help govern society to perform in an appropriate manner. Rules are what keep things stable, what keep our minds 'in line'. All the very things that destroy creativity. If you break rules you do something unexpected, something not many other people would do and that is exactly how we like to work in the creative world. Who ever said breaking rules was a bad thing? In the creative world rules are made to be broken. We are the people who think outside the box right? Are rules not in some way a kind of constraining box? If you dare to break rules however there is a strategy to do so in a way that gains the reaction you are looking for. Consider how breaking rules would affect the people you want to reach. Would you be seen as someone who can't be trusted or relied on for what is asked? or would you be seen as someone who takes brave risks, who challenges the challenge itself and in turn shows a willingness to tackle the challenging and constraining projects. Sometimes all it takes is some realistic thinking, I know they are just asking me to present my problem and solution but is simply telling them that really going to leave the impression I want? Will they remember me? What can I do that they didn't ask for that would surprise them enough to keep a vivid memory of my work? Please do go and be daring! stand out from the crowd. The only way to stand out from the crowd is to not be a part of the crowd that are governed by the same set of rules. |
