Do you find you grow new habits or lose old ones as time goes on? Your life involves a stream of growing and dying habits which can either improve or hinder your lifestyle. If you are looking to improve your lifestyle, it can be very beneficial to build good habits. It might be as simple as the habit of drinking a healthy smoothie every morning, going to the gym everyday, or coming up with a new idea or sketch every hour. The reason this is much easier said than done however, is held in the power of our 5-letter friend, build. Building takes time, effort, energy. It contradicts all that is found in habits, which come to us naturally. We don't feel forced, we can't help it, we feel it is a part of who we are. It is this contradiction that can get you lost on the way. To build good habits, you must begin by working at it. Set yourself reminders to do things, accept and ignore any unwillingness to do so, then do it. As cheesy as it sounds, let yourself believe it is a habit! Once you've done it enough times it should begin to settle in as something you feel your day isn't complete without doing. This isn't a guarantee for everyone, but it isn't simply the want for good habits that will get you there, it's a combination of these contradictory factors that may confuse you, but will be worth it in the end. |
