With the advancements in technology and communications, our society has become over communicated. We learnt how to get more and more information out there and available, but didn't seem to account for the fact that as humans we simply can't hold it all. These days, trying to get a message through to an audience is a challenge, because we only have room to consume so much. I've recently come to understand this through the work of Al Ries and Jack Trout - "The mind is already a dripping sponge that can only soak up more information at the expense of what's already there." We'll take in as much as we can, we can't help it. But the truth is that there just isn't enough room for it all, so a lot falls right through. If you are using your creativity to spread messages to people, keep in mind that you don't want to add to the over communicated soaking sponges of society. People only take in what they want to hear, only the clear and simple messages. You can't change someones mind just like that, since we'll only take in what we already understand. If you want to communicate your message you have to communicate it to the people who will listen, otherwise there is no point. Become a part of the community that shares your views, and build from there. |
