A lot of young creative people find that what they do as a hobby is something they want to carry over into a career. Upon learning what is available to work with it would seem that there is a vast difference between creativity for personal enjoyment and creativity for business. When you create for fun, with no payment reward and just a personal sense of enjoyment, judgements and client briefs are thrown out the window. But does that mean personal creativity is more fun? I don't believe it should. It can be easy to get lost in the creative process when you have a requirement to come up with ideas rather than just on a whim for fun. This is the difference between these realms, however the creative process should not be. Similar to what I describe in a previous post where I use the term 'all work and all play', I feel that creativity in business should be fun too. We are only good at what we do because of those uninterrupted moments of creativity in our own homes. The same process should be applied in a work situation, because without personal enjoyment, our work lacks passion and true engagement. Find strategies that bring fun back in to the workplace because no matter how 'unprofessional' it is, you will do better work. More creative workplaces need to utilise this knowledge, the 'professional' world just seems like a boring, uninspiring environment for people like me. Especially as a design student who has found this to be true, I hope in future I have the opportunity to be a part of one truly unprofessionally inspiring team, who lets me be a real person. |
