This is a very important lesson I've learnt as a design student, it is a method that can be so easily applied yet create an impact beyond your levels of expectation when you least expect it, and that is to just ask. If you need more time or money, if all you want is some advice from someone you idolise, or just some quick feedback, don't be afraid to just ask. You have nothing to lose except the time it took you to ask them. Don't waste time thinking "what if they don't reply to me", "what if they think I'm weird" or "there is no way they have time, they are too busy". Somebody will help you out no matter how famous or busy they think they are, and no matter how much it feels out of bounds compared to their usual structure. People like switching up their day a little bit or meeting new people, and they especially like if you show respect for what they do by asking for help. James Victore is an author, artist, activist and "firestarter" who utilises his own experiences in teaching creatives to unleash their personal gift. This advice is something I learnt from him, and so I thought what better way to demonstrate the point than by 'just asking' him to write the words for me himself to use as this post. He managed to reply to me with this post-it note in a matter of hours. Being a fan of Victore along with some 9000 subscribers to his weekly videos, makes this 2 minute effort a real privilege to receive, and reminds me that we are all just as human as each other. If you have something to ask, just ask it. |
