When doing creative work it is important to know that there are two types of environments you should be working in. Not only do you need to cater for your brain's left and right side thinking, but you need to know which environment best suits the work you're doing. When you're working on academic research, writing, analysis or require concentration you are thinking with your left brain. This means you need an environment that will offer you focus. Sitting at a desk in silence is usually the type of environment we observe for this kind of work. However this is the wrong environment for right side thinking! If you're trying to come up with creative ideas, think outside the box, feel emotions or use your imagination you need an environment that encourages creativity. You need to distract yourself from left side thinking by going for a walk, playing games, watching clouds, playing with kittens or dreaming. This is the ultimate environment for creativity to flourish. Spinning on your office chair banging your head on the desk aint gonna get you anywhere I'm afraid. Learn to balance these environments for the right kind of thinking at the right time. Set up an environment that allows you to play and relax but then get down to business when necessary and you'll have the recipe for a successful work flow. |
