Music has a big affect on the creative process, and you need to know when to listen to the right type. For me personally I've always listened to music while I'm trying to be completely free and creative without concentration, or if I've already had my bright spark idea and I'm just working through it. As soon as I need to concentrate, think of an idea or write down my thoughts music is impossible to have in the background. However I've noticed a lot of people feel they are able to listen to music 24/7, and I've never understood how they concentrate when they need to. But it's not that you can't listen to music when you're trying to concentrate, it's the type of music. Try something more soothing, perhaps without lyrics. Even as simple as an ambient noise. These are the sounds that can sometimes put you in a state of concentration, and may even be better than listening to traffic outside, people talking and classroom or workspace distractions anyway. The key word here is distraction - your ability to be productive declines when there are other distractions around, which is why thinking hard in the shower, or while lying in bed can be somewhat productive for your thoughts. As soon as it gets to playing around and letting your mind go, thats the time to have fun! Embrace the space and fill your ears with joy. Listen to the right music for you at the right time, and you can assist your brain in being creative. |
