As creatives we have the ability to bring creativity into everything we do. Please don't forget this! Students are told to research, to analyse, to dig deep, to find insight, to discover history, to predict trends. This is not designed just to be that boring compulsory part of completing a brief. It's actually essential in mastering your creation, and especially if you intend to go on to commercial design work. Research doesn't have to be boring, find the fun in it! instead of reading a book go talk to a real person, visit real places, learn from your own experiences. In my experience a lot of students use the method of deciding what they want to do and exactly how they're going to do it, then completing fake research to prove 'how they got there'. I believe the best tutor's will see right through that method, not to mention your audience. Theres nothing wrong with creating what you want to create at spontaneous moments. But you will find the works with deeper connection are the ones that can be backed up by the passion and research which has gone into it. Maybe the purpose of your work is that it's spontaneous? That's okay too. All I'm saying is that the pre-creation phase has such potential be just as creative as the final piece. Don't disregard it as 'the boring part' or you will miss out on some serious possibilities for the direction of your work. |
