Ok so it sounds a bit cheesy, but I wanted to find a way to express this particular issue I have. School/university grades, the whole 'C's get degrees' mentality and even teacher's reminding you, "the grade doesn't matter, it's all in the attitude" I believe students should worry about getting good grades, but not for the reason you might think. When I strive to get the highest grade possible, it's not because I'm blind to reality, I don't actually believe this grade worth 20% of my paper which is one of 4 papers for the semester of 1 year of my 3 year degree is going to effect whether I get a job or not. I'm naturally quite a motivated person, and yes giving me a bit of paper with a letter on it actually helps me want to do better. But aside from that, showing you have motivation and engagement with your work is an attractive aspect in a potential employee. Maybe these employers won't see it, but your teachers will, and sometimes they have big connections to the working world. If your reputation is high among them, you never know where it could lead you. I also like to consider it a sort of practice run for things we might worry about while working, like earning enough money, or impressing the right clients. If you worry about grades now and you disappoint yourself, well hey at least it might not stop you getting a degree. If you prove to yourself you can do well under these pressures, you know you'll be fine when you finish study. You're spending how many thousands of dollars on this education? don't waste it by giving it half of what you have. Worry about the things that matter. Learn to not over-worry, or worry for the wrong reasons. As James Victore famously says, be a warrior, not a worrier. |
