In the rising world of technology it seems we are forgetting what it really means to be 'social', because I can tell you it's not on social media. We have turned to technology for communication because it means we can control what we are saying and what we are hearing. According to Sherry Turkle in her TED talk, our smartphone and social media addiction offers us three fantasies. 1. that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be, 2. that we will always be heard and 3. that we will never have to be alone. She's described them as fantasies because they aren't reality. Unfortunately a lot of us have been fooled into thinking we are living this fantasy, that we are connected to everyone and that they all care about us. Could it be that in the future we forget how to read real emotions, or how to have a conversation in real time? We are allowing technology to become us when it's real strength is in how we can use it to facilitate us. Don't let the simple beauty of having some real human interaction diminish from your life. Stop emailing and start meeting with a handshake, stop texting and start talking. Focus on how technology can help you rather than hinder your social interactions. |
